A Selection of Better and Best Nail Polishes
For those times you want to add a pop of color to your nails
When most of us think of painting our nails, we picture the perfect color being shiny, glossy, even, and not fading or chipping for weeks. But, in order for nail polish to have all of those magical qualities, they must contain some very special chemicals. While we love a perfect mani-pedi, we know that some of the chemicals are not the best for our health. So, we rounded up a variety of safer nail polishes for you to check out.
For those times you want a good mani-pedi that will last and look like what you think of when you picture getting your nails done (think magical color-fast and non-chipping properties!), check out a nail polish from the "Better Nail Polishes" category. These polishes still have the basics of a standard polish but are free of the big 3 toxic chemicals - toluene, formaldehyde, and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) - plus TPHP, which is a hormone disruptor and has been shown to be absorbed through the nail bed into your blood. Choosing one of these is a great step towards safer polish. But just remember, that these options still contain some basic chemicals common to typical nail polish, so be thoughtful about how often you apply.
If you want to go a step further and choose polish that has no chemicals of concern, opt for one of the "Best Nail Polishes." A warning on these. Many of them are water based or designed differently that standard polish options (i.e. not as many magical properties). They are typically not designed to last for weeks, but rather a day or two. So, these are the ones to look at if you are just looking to have polish for a special event or to play with for a great girls night without caring exactly how long they will look pristine. Bonus, some of these are kid friendly.
What are you waiting for? Pull out the cucumber water and bathrobe and get your salon on.
